Shoulders: Up, back, and down

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Many of us have those pesky computer jobs where we are hunching over our key boards and mousin’ around with our right hands for 8+ hours a day. This can cause lots of undo tension in the upper traps because the chest (pecs) muscles become shortened while the upper back (traps) muscles are over stretched. Over time, your chest muscles are trained to stay short and your traps stay over extended resulting in hunchy posture and tight, crunchy shoulders. Although I’m not hunchy I totally have crunchy shoulders. And while I’m not judging, it’s definitely something we can all work on

To help relieve some of the stress on the upper back and to open the chest, you can simply remember: Up, Back and Down.

What it means:
1. Scrunch your shoulders up to your ears
2. Pull them back aiming for the wall behind you
3. And then drop your shoulders straight down so the rest below your ears

Feel that? Huge difference, right?

So now, you have opened your chest and engaged the muscles in your back so they continue to work to hold you up straight. In yoga, we always lead with our hearts and keep an open heart. Doing this simple posture correction several times a day will strengthen your core and back while keeping your chest and heart open - for all possibilites and for all new choices you can make today.

Feet on the Fly Resumes

Ian going up Lombard Street

Starting Saturday, April 26th Feet on the Fly will resume its place on the San Franciso streets and parks. Yahooey! I am excited to get together again to enjoy the outdoors, workout, laugh, hang with cool people and release some stress after long work days and work weeks.

Feet on the Fly is evolving so I thought I’d fill you in on those things tout de suite! For those of you who don’t know what Feet on the Fly is, click here for more information.

Welcome Vanessa. I am happy to announce that I will have a partner in crime! A “test pilot” if you will. Vanessa Kennedy (former Flyer!) will be training with me in tandem at first and then will train one class a week on her own. Both of us will pilot the Saturday classes. Vanessa will head up the running class and I will take the power walkers. That way we can all rally afterwards in Feet on the Fly fashion for the infamous orange slices, post-chatter, and coffee somewheres.

Longer Class and Yoga Added. Class time will be increased from 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes. Reason being, stretch time and cool down always seems to be rushed. Ending with yoga, I feel is extremely important. It allows us to cool down, calm our minds and our bodies before jetting off to do the next thing. If I can give you the gift of 15-20 minutes of mindful breathing and stretching, by golly I’m gonna do it! Seriously, it’s so important for flexibility, strength, and control of a peaceful mind. You, your bod and your mind will love it.

Pricing Change. Not a big shocker here because we have longer classes now. Punch cards will be $200 for 10 workouts and drop ins will be $25.

RSVP and 24 Hour Cancellations. If you plan on attending, please RSVP to reserve your spot. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just a little note saying, “Yes, in!” or “me!” We need at least 2 people to have class and we will limit the class to 8 people. Workouts will be cancelled if only 1 person has RSVP’d 24 hours prior to the class. Also, 24 hours is required for cancellation or you will be “punched” (hah!).

Fluid Calendar. We are going to stick to the schedule of Monday & Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings in the beginning. However, Vanessa and I both have day jobs like most people, so there is a possibility that we could be traveling for work. If that’s the case, we will just swap out a different day of the week, always trying to have at least 2 weekdays.

Saturdays. Feet on the Fly will be 2 or 3 Saturdays a month. If there is high demand, there is potential to add more.

Special Events. Once a month there will be a special event! This will be 1/2 workout, 1/2 big social hoo-ha. Or maybe 1/4 workout, 3/4 big social hoo-ha. You work out better and more consistently when you have friends surrounding you. This is to bond us all so we have workout comrades. Groovy stuff ahead I’m tellin ya!
